Back From Billund

Posted by GregF on
I'm home again, finally, after two weeks spent largely on the road!

It started with a few days in Saratoga Springs, NY, for LEGO Club meetings. Then after being home a couple days, it was off to Billund for BIONICLE story meetings. A few notes from the trip --

-- Billund is becoming the Orlando of Denmark. The hotels were packed, the airport was packed, and I had to stay with BIONICLE web producer Leah Weston Kaae and her family because there were no hotel rooms (and thanks to her for the hospitality). There are evidently plans to build a water park there now to go along with LEGOLAND.

-- The meetings went great. We totally mapped out 2009-2011 and everyone from the franchise manager on down was very happy with what we came up with. Enormous thanks to Christian from Advance, our creative agency, and Christoffer, our lead set designer, who contributed a lot of terrific ideas to the storyline. This past year has seen the story team working AS a team more than I think any other time in the history of BIONICLE. Lena and Jesper did their usual great job of keeping us on task, and Camilla let us know when we were going down paths that were too confusing or required too much knowledge of back story.

I won't say this was the most intense meeting we have ever had -- there wasn't any fighting, for one thing :) -- but it may have been the most productive. Over two days, we nailed three full years of story, including set ideas, settings, subtext, everything. I was fried by the end of it. The trip there and back was exhausting, but I have to say, it is really a great experience to be in a room with such creative people and just come up with ideas. When it's working, things flow; and when things stop flowing (as they did during one of our 2010 discussions), then you know you are on the wrong road and it's time to turn around and go back to the start.

-- Next step is I have to write up a summary of what we came up with for our next series of meetings in August, which are scheduled for four days mid-month.

-- Got to see the (almost) final 2008 summer sets. One thing to note is 2008 will see the return of some more advanced and complex builds, something BZPers have been asking for. I can't say anything beyond that, other than the sets are very impressive and definitely on my shopping list for next year.

-- There was a lot of other big news from the meeting, some you will hear about soon and some that has to wait a while. But all of it was good.

Ugh... I had to plan a week-long trip to somewhere a few days ago for a school project, and I chose Billund. It was frustrating. Glad to hear it wasn't always like this. :P

But anyway, I'm glad to hear that the sets are getting more complex, although I doubt people will be satisfied, and am unsure whether I'll consider it an improvement. This year was fantastic, and I'd like to keep with some of the quality we had this year in, for instance, the Zyglak and the Pit War Tortoise.

Keep in mind I am not referencing all sets -- only a handful of larger, higher priced ones. Canister sets will stay at about the same level of difficulty they have always been.

Awesome! By complicated, do you mean, like, Exo-Toa complicated?
Original#4
I'm hoping for complicated as in the original Rahi, although that's probably a bit too much to expect.

Wow, the storyline is mapped all the way to 2011? That's great! I can't wait for the more complicated sets in 2008. I built one of the big towers from the 2006 playsets, and I just thought it was too flimsy and easy to build. Using creatively-placed small pieces in place of a big, bulky piece would be great. *gets in time machine out of impatience*

Glad that you and the other people managed to create some nice story for 2009-2011. Also, I'm very happy on what you said about the sets. I'd love to make the larger sets to go past to the 2005 Titans complexity, if not even more (altough I suppose that's unlikely).

YES! Thank you! The main reason I by the Titan sets is because they're complex, and now it's returning in 2008! I couldn't have asked for more! Thanks for the info Greg, I'm now a very happy man. :)

As others have said, it's great that we're getting complex builds, but as noted, we'll have to wait to see just how high they meet our expectations.
I'm hoping some will be in the $20 range....

Great news on everything else! Sounds like it should be good.

"required too much knowledge of back story"?
So...Toa Nuva in or out?

Thanks!

Greg

Do you mean last few years level of difficulty, or '01 through '04?

But this is great news! I'm very happy to hear that the complexion is back, it'll be
awsome.

I like the Exo toa. It was my second 2002 set, and I spent all afternoon building it. (I was 7) then put kopaka in... waited too show it too my dad, then kept kopaka in ther for nearly a month :P
Glad too see some more complecate sets are coming back, so I can slave over them n simmilar fashion *nostalgia*

Wow. Three years of solid story planned? COOL!
Glad it was good, and i hoped you liked it!
PS. Did any one mention ideas for a future video game?
Original#12
The return of difficult sets is a good thing. I think you and lego makers have had many good ideas, I'm sure. :)
I know you can't answer to this but:
difficult set might mean Mata-Nui?
Original#13
Chocolate Frogs - You know I cannot give you an answer on what characters are in or out two years down the road. Suffice it to say, none of this has changed the plans we have for the Nuva. As for your comment regarding price -- as currently constituted, the sets I am referring to will be more expensive than $20. That is why there is a risk -- $20 or $30 sets sell okay for BIONICLE, ones higher than that have traditionally not done as well.

Funny thing is, without Legoland, Billund would be a practically dead town -- most people who live are in some way affiliated with LEGO. :) Glad to hear it's a popular place, that means activity and life, which should be good.

And I'm savagely drooling over those news of the complicated sets! Count on me in supporting LEGO's direction that way!

Aww, I wasn't invited to this meeting? I'm shattered. ;)

It sounds very productive indeed, and I can't wait to hear more about the results. As always, nice to hear cool behind-the-scenes stuff direct from the source.

Personally, I'm very interested in how the second-half 2007 sets do in the market, they interest me more than the playsets from the last couple of years. Vehicles instead of castle-type sets seem they would be more popular. And I've always been attached to the original Rahi, even though I know they didn't sell well... I've always thought they were some of the best-designed sets of the entire Bionicle line (specifically, Tarakava). And the Exo-Toa is another of my personal favorites.

More advanced and complex builds = Functions?

This all looks great, Greg. Thanks for letting us know. Lol. :P I'll be looking forward to the information due to come out yet this year, and I can't wait for the new sets for next year. XD

Wow. The 2008 titans sound promising. And stories up to 2011? I can't wait!
Original#19
Not referring to the titans -- bigger than that.

Greg

You mean the playsets? They're the only sets bigger than titans.
