I remember back when I did my first novel -- The River of God -- (which my ex-wife used to say was the most depressing thing she ever read, hee hee) -- I sat down one day to write a particular scene I had in mind. And what came out instead was something completely different -- just a beautiful scene showing the background of this one character -- and to this day I have no idea where that came from.
Now, sometimes, you have to do things a little differently. For example, BL #5 I knew had to end with a big battle, and there was a lot to get into it. So I wrote part of the beginning, then I wrote the end, then I wrote the middle. That way I made sure I got everything in I had to without the end feeling rushed.
