4Simple. They needed a power source more stable than the one they had tried using before. EP is not, by nature, unstable -- it's not explosive -- its effects are actually quite predictable in a way, transform or destroy, no middle ground.

I mean, we've got Ackar, a heroic old Arena champion, Vastus, a Glatorian who wants to make up for past actions, Gresh and Tarix, two pure Glatorian, Gelu, who's personality leans towards Gresh's and not Strakk's, and Kiina, a pushy female Glatorian. It seems like everyone except for Strakk are heroes.

Strakk is, at his core, a mercenary -- he fights because he is paid to. With the exception of Gresh, tell pretty much any of those Glatorian to go into the arena and fight for free and they will say no. They fight because they get fed and sheltered and equipped in return ... they don't go into the arena for the fun of it, anymore than boxers in our world do. Strakk is certainly greedier and less ethical than some, but at the end of the day, they are all paid fighters. And Strakk fights, and frequently wins, for his village, so he is a hero of sorts to them -- how other villages feel about him is not something he cares about, he doesn't work for them.
24Countries in our world ask men and women to fight and maybe die for them - and they pay them with money and shelter and food and education. If they don't pay them, feed them, house them, etc., odds are the soldiers will mutiny and refuse to fight.
